Wegmans, a family-owned chain with stores in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, is America’s favorite grocery store, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by Market Force Information, surveyed more than 7,000 consumers across the United States to find out which grocery stores they shopped at most often and why.

Wegmans scored high marks for its prices, selection, and customer service. Publix, a regional chain with stores in the Southeast, came in second.

Trader Joe’s, a popular chain with a cult following, was ranked third. Costco, the warehouse club known for its low prices, was fourth.

Safeway, the grocery chain owned by Albertsons, was fifth. Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, was sixth. Whole Foods, the high-end grocery chain owned by Amazon, was seventh.

Albertsons, the grocery chain that owns Safeway, was eighth. Target, the discount retailer with a growing grocery business, was ninth. Sam’s Club, the warehouse club owned by Walmart, was tenth.

The study found that shoppers are looking for more than just low prices when they choose a grocery store. They also want a good selection of products, helpful and friendly customer service, and a clean and well-organized store.

Wegmans, Publix, and Trader Joe’s were the top three grocery stores in all four of those categories. Costco, Safeway, Kroger, and Whole Foods were also among the top 10 in all four categories.

The study found that shoppers are willing to pay more for a better experience. Wegmans, Publix, and Trader Joe’s are all relatively high-priced stores, but shoppers say they are worth the extra money.

“Wegmans, Publix, and Trader Joe’s are setting the standard for customer experience in the grocery industry,” said Greg Buzek, president of Market Force Information. “They are delivering on the three key drivers of customer satisfaction: price, selection, and customer service. They are also creating an emotional connection with their customers that keeps them coming back.”

The study found that grocery stores are facing stiff competition from other types of retailers, such as discount stores, drugstores, and even gas stations.

“The grocery industry is under siege from all sides,” said Buzek. “Retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon are making inroads into the grocery business, and consumers are increasingly willing to buy groceries from them. Grocery stores need to up their game if they want to stay competitive.”
